The Governor, Chief Theodore Orji has commissioned four digitalized fire fighting trucks donated to the State by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Commissioning the vehicles at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, the Governor thanked the Commission for coming to the aid of the State and giving her a sense of belonging.
He said that with the vehicles, the State is now prepared more than ever before to confront fire outbreaks in the State.
The Governor used the forum to remind the NDDC of some of their on-going projects in the state which needed to be completed and pleaded with the commission to complete them.
Chief Orji lauded the commissioner representing Abia state in the NDDC Board, chief Sam Nwogu for bringing joy to the state by attracting the vehicles and implored him to continue to attract projects that will directly impact on Abians especially the down trodden.
He said he was optimistic that the commissioner will do well,having discharged his assignment creditably as the chairman of the Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ASOPADEC) and implored him not to allow what is due to the state to be taken away by other states.
The Abia state chief executive advised the Director of the state fire services to liaise with the NDDC for proper training of his staff in handling the new fire fighting equipment to ensure that they last, and further directed him to see to it that there is water in the vehicles at all times to prevent the loss of lives and property of the citizenry.
Earlier in his speech, the commissioner representing Abia in the NDDC Board, chief Sam Nwogu said that Abia is faced with with challenges of fire outbreaks, adding that the trucks will complement government effort in tackling the problem.
He assured the governor that he will not disappoint him and Abians.
The ceremony witnessed demonstration of the use of the fire fighting trucks by fire fighters in the state.
